Eyes on the Road

Volkswagen recently released a commercial in a Hong Kong movie theatre that was a little out there, as far as car commercials go. It took place from the point of view of the driver, riding along a small road lined with trees. Meanwhile, everyone in the theatre simultaneously received a text. They all immediately reached for their phones to read the message, but as soon as they did, the car on the screen swerved into a tree, totally wrecking the windshield.

 

 

The steam emitting from the engine wafted up to turn the screen white, which then read, “Mobile use is now the leading cause of death behind the wheel. A reminder to keep your eyes on the road.”

Anyone who sees this commercial will undoubtedly rethink picking up their phone while driving. We can only hope that no one ever has to experience a real-life version of what played out on the theatre’s screen, so it was probably the best way to get people to acknowledge the possibility that it could happen to them. I’d consider an ad like this to be on par with one of those terrifyingly realistic smoking ads that have recently been occupying our TV screens and radio speakers.

Can this really be called a Volkswagen advertisement, though? Sure, the iconic VW logo and “Das Auto” flashed briefly on the screen at the end of the commercial, but there was nothing in the clip the specifically promoted Volkswagen. Plus, scaring people isn’t always the best way to get them to buy from you. Volkswagen didn’t need to air this ad—presumably, they did it to ensure the safety of drivers everywhere, VW owners and other brand owners alike.

World Debut of VW Beetle R Concept Model

At Volkswagen, the letter “R” promises top-notch performance, a claim validated by the 266-hp Golf R and the 261-hp Scirocco R. In a world debut at the IAA in Frankfurt, Volkswagen is now showing a third variation of this sporty theme: the Beetle R Concept, based on the 21st Century Beetle. Like the Golf R and Scirocco R, the R version of the Beetle was also created at Volkswagen subsidiary Volkswagen R GmbH, located near Wolfsburg.

The Beetle R Concept is still a design study. Those who are familiar with the Beetle Turbo (200 hp) know that the car could offer even more performance, similar to that of the Golf R and Scirocco R.

Visually, the Beetle R Concept, painted in “Serious Grey”, offers a glimpse of what a production version might look like. The concept is equipped with 20-inch “Talladega” aluminum-alloy wheels—the same design used on the Golf R and Scirocco R, although those cars wear 18- and 19-inch rims. R-design blue brake calipers are easy to spot through the Beetle’s wheels, which feature five triple spokes.

As is usual on R models, the interior also makes an immediate impression. In the front, the driver and passenger sit in motorsport bucket seats with what are referred to as Ergopads made of gray nubuck leather. The seats are upholstered in black Nappa leather. The R logo is embossed on the seats and the seat seams and piping are in “Space Blue”.

VW Touareg Receives 2011 Motorist Choice Award

Notable automotive industry research companies, IntelliChoice and AutoPacific, today announced the 2011 Motorist Choice Awards. Now in its sixth year, this venerable award series is designed to recognize those vehicles that deliver the compelling combination of high consumer satisfaction and lower-than-expected ownership costs over time.  This year, IntelliChoice and AutoPacific continued categorizing the winners into a collection of 15 popular lifestyle segments that shoppers could easily identify with.

Volkswagen took home the High Tech award with the Volkswagen Touareg.

“The Motorist Choice Awards are designed to assist consumers by using a categorization scheme other than traditional vehicle classes. Our research has shown that buyers often shop in more than one vehicle segment based on their needs and uses, rather than simply choosing a segment and then comparing models within it,” said George Peterson, president of AutoPacific.

Each year, AutoPacific performs the broadest and most widely followed owner satisfaction survey in the U.S. with a record of over 72,000 responses in 2011. This study solicits consumer feedback on a recently purchased 2011 vehicle using 48 key attributes covering the entire ownership experience. From these data, AutoPacific compares overall buyer satisfaction between individual models and vehicle classes and announces its annual Vehicle Satisfaction Awards (VSAs) based on the findings.

Meanwhile, IntelliChoice constantly monitors and adjusts cost of ownership metrics for over 1,800 model trim lines to provide consumers with valuable insight into the financial impact of ownership over a five year time horizon.  This analysis is the foundation of the IntelliChoice Best Overall Value of the Year (BOVY) awards announced each January, and its interim Best Bets awards which were recently announced for the upcoming 2012 model year.

2011 VW Jetta: No. 1 Car for Teen Drivers

MercuryNews.com reported today the top three new cars for new drivers and listed the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta as the Number 1 vehicle for safety, cost and fuel efficiency. Car accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers. So when it comes time to buy a suitable car for a teen driver it’s important to choose the safest car that meets your budget.

David Champion, the senior director of Consumer Reports, was interviewed for this article and recommended the 2011 Jetta as the Number 1 vehicle under $20,000 for the following reasons:

- Among its standard safety features is a crash response system that automatically unlocks the doors, cuts the flow of gas and turns on the hazard lights when it senses a crash.

- The lowest-priced model gets 29 miles per gallon, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. A diesel version gets better mileage, but will cost you around $6,000 more.

Champion recommends cars with the smallest, four-cylinder engines, so they’re not too powerful. Critical safety features include anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control, which applies the brakes to individual wheels if it senses the driver is swerving out of control. And stick with front-wheel-drive. While many people prefer all-wheel-drive in snowy weather, it can give kids a false sense of security and encourage them to drive too fast in hazardous conditions.

Price is a factor, of course, especially since adding a teen to your auto insurance can easily cost several thousand dollars a year. McCartt said used cars from recent model years — with all of the safety features of current models — are a good choice for teens. The Insurance Institute lists its top safety picks for each year back to 2006 on its website, so that’s one place parents can find the safest cars from any given year. Results of U.S. government crash tests back to 1990 are also available on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website.

2012 Beetle Modern Style Debuts at New York Auto Show

The 2012 Beetle debuted at the New York Auto Show and was instantly recognizable as the new and modern Volkswagen Beetle with huge changes from the first-generation car. At the heart of this controversial new design is the lowered roofline. Unlike the 2010 Volkswagen New Beetle, the 2012 Beetle doesn’t have a perfectly arched roofline.

Instead of the straight cut line for the doors on the older New Beetle, the new Beetle’s doors have curved edges. The taillight design eschews the circular units on the outgoing Volkswagen for larger lights that meet the edge of the trunk opening. For the interior, the biggest change – no flower holder.

Viewed as refreshing and cool, the new 2012 Beetle will be available in showrooms this fall.

David Maus Volkswagen Showcases Top Safety Pick Winners

Volkswagen named a front runner in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ?IIHS? Top Safety Pick Award for 2011 with 9 winner s that performed well in front, side, rollover, and rear crashed based on available electronic stability control – a crash avoidance feature that significantly reduces crash risk.

One of the stand-out vehicles for Volkswagen is the new designed Touareg which was the only large SUV to earn the Top Safety Pick in that category for 2011. The Institute does not normally evaluate SUV?s of this size but Volkswagen requested crash tests to demonstrate the Touareg?s crashworthiness, establishing it as a winner.

In the last year IIHS has toughened the criteria for all qualifiers by requiring vehicles to earn a good rating for performance in roof strength to assess protection in a rollover crash. The outlook for side-impact protection has increased as well, in part because of the stronger side structures and standard side airbags not in protection of new vehicles to protect the head and torso.

Volkswagen Ranked Top European Brand with Hispanic Community

In a recent article on hispanicad.com Volkswagen leads the European brands with the most increased sales to Hispanics in 2010 according to a Polk study of top brand registrations from January through September.

In 2010, Volkswagen of America, Inc announced a nationwide contest during the World Cup in conjunction with a large sponsorship of the event on Univision. Together with soccer legends Ramoncito Morales and Ramon Ramirez, Volkswagen encouraged soccer fans to create and upload their own “fanistitial” videos documenting their passion for soccer.

The increase in exposure of the Volkswagen brand to the Hispanic community has shown positive results in new vehicle sales. A significant attribute is the new 2011 Jetta with a decreased price tag and increase in style and design.

VW Jetta TDI Wins 2011 Urban Green Vehicle of the Year

The 2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI, currently in David Maus VW showrooms, is the 2011 “Urban Green Vehicle of the Year” recipient by Decisive Auto Magazine. The Media outlet states the Jetta TDI delivers sophisticated style, precision German engineering and VW’s no-charge Carefree Maintenance for three years or 35,000 miles?.

The VW Jetta TDI also took Top Honors as Best in Class of 2011 Auto Lineup for the features in which it has been acclaimed for throughout the magazine. Features that include a 2.0L turbocharged and direct injected engine providing 140 horsepower, runs quietly as a gasoline engine and has an EPA-estimated 30 mpg city and 42 mpg highway with a 0-60 mph time of 8.6 seconds.

The 2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI will be honored at the 15th Annual Urban Wheel Awards on January 9, 2011, during Press Week of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan.

Editors at Decisive Auto magazine, along with a panel of 15 independent automotive journalists selected the year’s most stylish, practical and attainable vehicles. The judging panel spent several months driving dozens of cars in a variety of North American urban settings before choosing the Volkswagen Jetta Diesel as Urban Green Vehicle of The Year: Decisive Auto’s Urban Vehicles of The Year are featured in the magazine’s fall issue, which is available online at decisivemagazine.com and the Apple Store.

Volkswagen Introduced Final Edition New Beetle

Volkswagen America announced the Final Editions for the 2010 New Beetle and New Beetle Convertible, which will mark the last of Volkswagen’s current generation of the iconic models. Available at either David Maus VW Showroom this spring – the Final Editions will be limited to only 1,500 units each. The Final Editions will receive a host of unique upgrades and touches that will truly set them apart from others cruising across the country.

The New Beetle was launched in 1998 with the convertible following a year later and both have become an iconic vehicle of the VW line-up. For the Final Editions VW decked out the exterior in special Aquarius Blue paint with a painted black roof on the coupe and a two-tone Aquarius Blue and Campanella White paint on the convertible.

The interior showcases a few new touches such as the steering wheel, special interior paint, and much more.
